I’ve never been so close to Mt. McLoughlin! Beautiful country

Date: 5/21/16
Hike Difficulty: moderate
Hike Length: 6.85 mi roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 499 ft
Time: 2 hrs 38 mins

My Rating (out of 5): 4.0 – This was one of those times where you just have to settle with what you get. My roommate and I originally set out for the Cold Springs trailhead in Sky Lakes Wilderness, but there was a bit more snow on the road than we anticipated. This lead us to backtrack a little and find the road to Fourmile Lake, which was also snowed in. At that point, we cut our losses and decided to just hike the remaining 3 miles to the lake, instead of trying to find any official trails that were already open. Although the snow kind of sucked to walk on, we had a very rewarding view of Mt. McLoughlin when we finally reached the lake. One thing I didn’t realize was that glaciers had come in and wiped away the entire north side of McLoughlin, so it was an interesting perspective of the mountain that I wasn’t used to. The lake itself was gorgeous, too. We will be returning to Sky Lakes Wilderness soon, hopefully in the next few weeks before the snow melts and bugs start going crazy. This place gets very buggy very fast.
