My Rating (out of 5): 4.5 – I wanted to try somewhere new today, so I decided to get really ballsy and try to climb Red Buttes. The more I read about it, though, the more I realized that my dog probably wouldn’t make it to the top; there was mention of a class 3 scramble, which is not dog-friendly. Knowing this, I headed out for Red Buttes anyway, having Echo Lake as a good Plan B in the same area. Both are right off the Pacific Crest Trail and I was excited to go down a section that I hadn’t tried before.

It turns out that by the time I got to the intersection where I had to decide which one I wanted to do, I was overheating so badly that I knew I wanted to go skinny dip in the lake. It was a glorious quick dip that I had with Grace in the lake before making our way 400 feet back up to the PCT. I’ll have to pick a bit cooler of a day or go earlier in the morning to make it to Red Buttes.
