My Rating (out of 5): 4.5 – I need to admit to myself that it is snow season and that I won’t be able to hike like I do in dry weather. I was barely even able to get the trailhead because of my low passenger car scraping on the snow piled up between tire tracks. When we hit the trail, I had come prepared with boots and all, but I really should’ve had some good hiking snowshoes to be able to make it to the top of Cowhorn Mountain.
This hike had beautiful scenery with Mount Thielsen and Mount Eddy around. There were a few animal tracks that we found, including a bear and a cougar. All in all, I think my friend and I did pretty well given the circumstances. At some points, the snow was up to almost my knees. We trudged along far enough to get a good panoramic view of Cowhorn, which looks doable once you get past the snow. On the way back down, we stumbled down the steep slope to check out Windigo Lake, before heading south and connecting back up with the PCT.
It looks like it’s time for me to invest in some good snowshoes so that I can make it the whole 9.4 miles next time regardless of the snow depth.
