I came back to give Kerby Flat another visit. Last time, I had a fresh tattoo and left a bit early because the sun and friction were bothering me. This time, however, was quite different because a big snowstorm recently hit the area, including the Illinois Valley. The road out to the trailhead was plowed pretty well, so it wasn’t much of a challenge to get there, but the trail itself was snowy and muddy.
There was a bit more to the loop that I didn’t take so I didn’t even get to Kerby Flat itself, which is directly west of the trailhead near the Illinois River’s shore. I did, however, get to hike up Deer Creek near Star Flat and see a cool bog with pitcher plants covered in snow.
